Class Descriptions

Classes for Grades K-3:

Language arts for K-3:  Seussical Jr.

If you don't love Dr. Seuss already, you will by the end of this class!  Dr.Seuss, captivating audiences, young and old, is one of my favorite authors! We will be incorporating selected songs from the hit Broadway musical, Seussical in this class to tie it all together and share with parents at the end of the semester show.  Over the course of the semester, we will read several of his most well-known and loved works, discuss it, then reinforce it by doing various activities based on the book of the week.  This will include activities such as making "Cat in the Hat" edible treats one week, acting out the story another week, making our own oobleck with Bartholomew, learning about rhyming and poetry, starting recycling projects with the Lorax and many more.  We will also learn about Dr. Seuss and his struggles to become published, in which case we will all come up with our own seusstastical stories. Each week we will also work on learning our songs from the Seussical musical.  During class time we will also work on some theater skills in preparation for the show.  Don't forget to bring your imaginations to class! Taught by Elmarie H.   Tuesdays from 1/10/12-5/1/12@ 10:00-11:30.

Math for K- 3:  Get down those addition & subtraction facts!

Tired of trying to get down those math facts?  Frustrated because the kids are finding it so dry and boring? This class will help students learn their facts in a fun way with songs & games as well as some explanations and hands-on demonstrations.  Each week we will learn one set of math facts after doing an initial pre-test to see who knows what, so we don’t keep learning unnecessary facts.  We will learn skip counting songs, to help speed up math until multiplication facts are memorized.  We will play some games every week, e.g. when we’re learning addition facts, we might play Addition war, Addition Bingo, Zeus on the Loose and many more.  Games I have from Rightstart Math as well as Flashcard games will be used to practice specific facts until we know them all and can play games that involve all of the facts like the above.   If you already know some facts, you’re welcome too.  We split the class up and different groups play different games.

The emphasis will be on the fact that we all need to learn something and there will be no competition on who gets it all down first, we will all move at our own rate.   When playing games, it will be co-operative and not pin students who know more against those who don’t yet.   Facts will be taught in fact families so that relationships between numbers are evident.  Come have some fact fun with us! Taught by Elmarie H.  Thursdaysfrom1/12/12-5/3/12@ 10:00-11:30.

Shaun Marksbury

My wife and I hail from Florida, coming out here in 2005 on scholarship to continue my education. We’ve been blessed with eleven years of marriage and four kids (three girls and a boy) along the way. As to the continuing schooling, I’m a grad of The Master’s College (Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministries), now entering my senior year at The Master’s Seminary (Masters in Divinity).

So what’s the deal with Lighthouse? To put it simply, I’ve always enjoyed teaching. I began helping young people while still in high school myself: as a Martial Arts instructor during the week, and as a leader in Children and Youth Ministries during the weekend. In the fourteen years since came several adult classes (one bringing the blessing of the scholarship, but that is another story), as well as private tutoring and class courses in English, science, math, speech and debate, technology, self-defense, and now, of course, history.

Education is the cornerstone of everything we do, both as people and as a people. It’s vital for our children to have a firm grasp of grammar and logic so they can process ideas with critical minds and understand the design of the universe around them. With the blinding rate of stimuli and data streaming into their phones and computers, equipping them to be able to pause and sift information for value is difficult. It is a life-long journey, and I hope I can provide a helpful nudge along the way.
